Manzi Announces That Jeanne D’arc Credit Union Will Open At Methuen High School

Mayor William M. Manzi announced today that the Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union will open a new branch office at Methuen High School this winter. The High School is located at One Ranger Road. This is the fourth High School branch for Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union which will serve the financial needs of the school’s 2000 students, teachers, administrators and staff. The Credit Union’s partnership with Methuen High will offer students the unique opportunity to receive valuable financial education and hands-on training as part of the high school curriculum.

The Credit Union will build a temporary branch in the Main Lobby of the High School and will move to a permanent space once the High School renovation is complete. This temporary office will be situated in the school’s main entrance, providing easy access for students and teachers. It will be open Monday through Friday during school hours. In addition to teller stations, the office will house an ATM.

This is the Credit Union’s tenth office in the Merrimack Valley and the third office it has opened in two years, a testament to the Credit Union’s increasing popularity throughout the area. In addition to its headquarters in Lowell, other offices are located in Chelmsford, Dracut, Tyngsboro, Methuen, and Westford.

“This is an excellent partnership between the City and the business community,” Manzi stated. “The high school branch office will provide students with a chance to open a bank account at a convenient location. It will also launch many educational opportunities for students and teachers. I’d like to officially welcome Jeanne D’Arc as they open their second Methuen location.”

Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union was established in 1912 and is a full-service, member-owned, community-based financial cooperative with over 54,000 members and more than $840 million in assets. They operate six full-service branches in Lowell, Dracut (2), Tyngsboro, Chelmsford and Methuen, Mass.; three High School Branches at Lowell High, Dracut High and Nashoba Valley Technical High School; and loan centers in Lowell and Chelmsford.

Methuen weighs paid advertising at sporting events
By J.J. Huggins

METHUEN — School officials are moving forward with a proposal that would allow companies to advertise at school sports facilities — but businesses that peddle booze, tobacco and adult entertainment need not apply.

“You could have a limited amount of advertising,” said School Committeeman Kenneth Willette Jr., who brought forward the proposal. “You couldn’t have any advertising that would advocate for alcohol or tobacco or violent themes like on video games or adult entertainment. It has to be in concert with education.”

Sporting goods or health care companies would be appropriate candidates, Willette said.

Congratulations to Methuen High School’s Lisa Barone, who was awarded the February SOAR Award. A great student with a wonderful musical future.
Put forward by Fine Arts Director Thomas Walters: It is my great pleasure to nominate Lisa Angela Barone for the Methuen High School 2010 SOAR award in the performing arts. Lisa is an extraordinary young woman with limitless potential for success in music. She has an extensive background in voice and piano, as well as her flute playing in the Ranger Band make her an ideal candidate for this award.

Lisa has a wonderful, bubbly, and exuberant personality that promotes active leadership and respect with her teachers and her peers. Her drive for musical excellence, coupled with her amazing singing voice, has established for her a tremendous reputation among musicians. She has represented Methuen High School with distinction at all levels of music festivals, including last years Massachusetts All State Music Festival at Symphony Hall in Boston. She coaches students in vocal techniques both in and out of the choir, helping students prepare auditions and directing sectional rehearsals. Her resume of performances with the Handel and Haydn Society’s Young Women’s Chorus, along with her private study at the New England Conservatory are most impressive, particularly for a high school student.

Lisa hopes to continue her musical study at the college level. Her top choices are the Julliard School of Music in New York and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she has been invited for auditions, and of course the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. We certainly wish her every success.

Mayor wants to name Methuen Adult Learning Center for Callan
By J.J. Huggins

METHUEN — Mayor William Manzi is proposing to name the Methuen Adult Learning Center after Shirley Callan, the school’s founder and longtime leader.

Callan died Feb. 1 at the age of 73. She started the Methuen Adult Learning Center with grant money in February 1991. The school, located inside the Currier School at 36 Boylston St., is a part of the Methuen public school system and has about 130 students who are learning English as a second language and receiving GEDs.

Manzi, the chairman of the School Committee, is proposing to name the center the “Shirley Callan Adult Learning Center at the Currier School.”

“Nobody in the community did more for adult education — and stood in when times were tough when other people might have given up — than she did,” Manzi said.

Lawrence, Methuen parochial schools merge to form new academy
By Jim Lockwood

LAWRENCE — Echoing the trend of consolidating struggling Catholic schools that face declining enrollment and resulting financial pressures, the Archdiocese of Boston announced on Feb. 3 that St. Patrick School in Lawrence and Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Methuen will consolidate to form Lawrence Catholic Academy.

The academy will open at St. Patrick School in September 2010 and will serve children from preschool through grade 8.

In a letter to parents and guardians, the pastors of both parishes said, “We have concluded that we need to take a bold step to address the significant financial challenges facing Our Lady of Good Counsel School and the declining enrollments that all of Lawrence’s Catholic schools have experienced in recent years. Rather than standing by to witness the decline of Catholic education in Lawrence, we have reached a decision that we believe will launch an exciting new chapter for Catholic education in Lawrence and Methuen.”

Methuen educator Shirley Callan dies
By J.J. Huggins

METHUEN — Shirley Callan, founder and supervisor of the highly respected Methuen Adult Learning Center, died Monday at the age of 73. Callan had cancer and continued to work from her hospital bed, said Ann Marie Krusell, chairwoman of the Methuen High English department. “She’s the personification of what every educator should be,” Krusell said.

Callan, who leaves behind three sons, started the Methuen Adult Learning Center with grant money in February 1991. The school at 36 Boylston St., which is part of the Methuen public school system, has about 130 students who are learning English as a second language and receiving GEDs, according to her colleagues.

The state considers the learning center to be the best adult education program in Massachusetts, said Superintendent Jeanne Whitten.

To assist Haiti, youngsters donate $1 to wear casual red and blue clothes to school

HAVERHILL — Their efforts to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti were both symbolic and practical.

The student council at St. Joseph School of All Saints Parish asked their fellow students to wear casual clothing in red and blue, the colors of the flag of Haiti. They also asked the students to donate $1 each to the Haitian Relief Fund.

The results: A colorful showing of support for Haiti, and $480 for the relief cause. The children’s work is one of several efforts in Haverhill and the Merrimack Valley to help the people of Haiti. “They are a very giving group of children,” said Susan Florent, math teacher and student council adviser. “That’s one thing about these kids — if there’s something going in the world they pick up on it.”

At Presentation of Mary Academy in Methuen, the students at the all-girls schools will pay not to wear their uniforms next week, and the money will be donated to the archdiocese for Haiti relief. Sister Susan Frederick, president at Presentation, said prayers are recited for Haiti every morning and the topic is discussed in theology class.

“This is one way to gain awareness about our worldwide family and to be united in one God,” Frederick said. “We need to be sensitive to the needs of others so we can bring compassion and kindness.”

Donations from all Caritas Christi Health Care hospital staff and physicians, including from Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, are being collected. The health care group has already pledged $300,000 to the American Association of the Order of Malta, which operates the Hospital Sacré Coeur in Haiti.
